Site Changes

As I haven't posted for awhile I expect the loyal among you have probably noticed, and are wondering what I may be up to. My host for the images was a site at easyspace, but they are withdrawing their free sites, necessitating a move to another host, and the re-tagging of a hundred and one images and external file links. What a drag, however, I've only myself to blame, so I'll have to knuckle down and get it sorted.
Ive been in communicado with a fellow blogger about mp3 blogs or similar, so you never know, this may turn into a media hotspot for good downloads, if I ever get the time. That's in between the pithy political posts.
As I'm also in the business of earning money to survive, I wont be able to sort this out in the near future, as WORK looms it's ugly/beautiful head again.

Broken Saints DVD

Finally the Broken Saints DVD is available, and for a measly $40 + shipping. It comes as a four disc box set and contains fully remastered versions of all the episodes, complete with voice over action from famous dudes and dudettes in the gaming world. I fully recommend this stuf if you are into flash anime/graphic novel styles. Like angel b dean mentioned below, broken saints started life as a flash comic on the web, and became rather more famous as each episode was released. It stayed the course whilst others fell by the wayside [Little Ninja anyone??], and I've watched it since 2000 ish. The blokes involved have found the money to carry through the whole project without the obligatory advertising and sponsorship, so I hope that spirit survives into their newfound fame and wealth. I've been in touch with them on occasion and they all seem really nice and friendly. The soundtrack CD's [ by Tobias Tinker] are also well worth investing in if you like intelligent ambient emotional electro [or something].

Films from Iraq

Just a word about my friends over at tenfootfilms - Sean Mcallister has made the film 'The Liberace of Baghdad', and a premier showing is in Sheffield tonight, with Samir Peter, the main guy in the film, and also the infamous Sean Langan, and The Baghdad Blogger [aka Salam Pax] in attendence to discuss pertinent issues....both Seans regularly have stuf shown on the BBC, so I expect that 'Liberace...' will be shown soon too.

here's the link:

I'm quite jealous I can't be there, but I bet the discussion is worth it alone....

A Virtual Thriller - Part 3

This is the flash thriller animation that I always recommend - Angel B Dean, made by Dominik W Neuffer. The third episode is done and he has moved the dialogue onto sound dubbed voices, but still including speech bubbles.
What I like most about this is how, as he has gone along, the imagery and atmosphere have really striven for 'adult' comic reality [not xxx, just grown up somehow]. Great use of soundtrack with current music, and complex storylines. Some of the touches for the computer activity are great, and the lighting is always really sharp.
The trailers he makes are also well worth watching, especially the official 'new' trailer, which has a BoSh credit, for which I am blushing....

The domains for this comic are angelbdean.de and virtualthriller.com
Go there now, and enjoy.

Give me the adverts any day....

I've been getting some great advertising on the adsence, 'Meet Military Men', and 'Half My Heart is in Iraq', marvellous terminology. The mind boggles, it does.

I am either thick or slow or both

I've been away from blogging as have had my head stuck up a php manual or seven. I'm new to the concept of database websites, [building them anyway..] but clients keep going on about them and some would even want their own bottletops.com or whatever to sell their million and one useless items with webpages, in the weak belief that suddenly every man and his dog will want their product, if you could buy it online. [Why do people think that??] Anyway it's taking me an age to get my skewed perspective round php, mysql and such. If anyone has any tips [that I might be able to understand] please tell me, put me out of this purgatory.

Now that the election is over, everything seems strangely quiet. Except in Fallujah of course.

BTW: I was messing about with the blogroll [trying to duck out of my php learning..]and discovered how to put a little image tag in the code, so that your blogroll can show who has updated recently. Clever eh? I know, it's just small mercies to make me feel better about knowing NOTHING WHATSOEVER about databasing and dynamic page building.

Remember Remember the 5th of November

Unbeknownst to most polite American society, British people, on the 5th of November, celebrate the catching and burning at the stake of Guy Fawkes, a chap who in 1605 decided to try and blow up the houses of Parliament. He was a papist [Catholic] by the way. He was caught, and the 'gunpowder plot' foiled. [Actually he was hung, drawn and quartered, then presumably burned at the stake. Allegedly. It was a long time ago,I can't remember.]

When I find myself having to explain this to anyone who is not a british type, I am struck by how incredibly prejudiced wrong word, more pig ignorant and shocking this practise is. The fact that it also happened 399 years ago is also quite hard for most people to relate to. It's no wonder we have this reputation for being complete barbarians, which of course we are.

An informative link about poor old Guy Fawkes. What a baddy.

There is a rhyme that commemorates the day:

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...
[thanks to rhymes.org.uk]

We learn it as children.

Why we knew this would happen

http://www.electoral-vote.com

When you look at the picture of how the vote is divided state to state, it's as obvious as Tory/Labour divides of old. Think all the middle spread of states as like the shires and the north of Britian, the coastal urban areas like our coastal urban areas, north or south, and it's as predicatable as that. People vote because of social class, moral values and family tradition. To think that the floating vote was ready for 'seachange' was never on the cards.

Having said that, I think Bush is no more a pawn in the game as Kerry would be. It's naive to think that one man is so effective. He fits the bill for the Americans at large, but he also causes real hatred, both amongst them, and in the wider world. America has always been unpopular in certain areas, but now it's getting out of control, for a variety of reasons. I'm very curious as to what may happen next, what we may be in for. After all, it has been a pretty chaotic ride since the 2000 election.

God knows where it leaves Blair, he is truly between a rock and a hard place.

Cspan map - a nice bit of flash election stats

It's a New Day, but will anyone notice?

Having earlier read again the comments from fatkid about the whole Bush versus Kerry thing, [on 'Fight to the Death for Freedom' post], I think a couple of points are good to make here:

1. It's too easy to be anti war and therefore anti Bush. The picture is much bigger.[I'm talking about the cosy left here.]
2. Bush is an idiot looking guy. But he can't really help that.
3. Kerry is a dork. He can't help that.
4. Surely judgement must be made on facts and reasoning.
5. Kerry did toast Bush in the debates. [Did Bush wear a device?]
6. Bush knows alot more about being an American for Americans. Kerry is a charisma free zone.
7. John Edwards let the side down.
8. The Republicans know how to look as if they are in control, like the British Tories in the 80's, or like Labour in the 90's. They just look in charge.
9. Both sides have used dirty tricks and smear campaigns.
10. Both guys are members of Skull and Bones, and part of hugely wealthy, influential families, not remotely part of average America.*

What Im trying to show is that obviously, both sides are tainted and in bed with all sorts of cronies. Both sides are weak, and neurotic. Both sides are unrepresentitive of the common man. How to measure the lesser evil? How to measure the best chance of good for the majority? How to trust the mechanics of the democratic machine?

*Could you imagine someone like the great John Prescott [UK Deputy Prime Minister and working class hero] ever being in high profile politics in America?
Can't wait to find out who gets it. [no pun intended....]

Fight to the Death for Freedom

SoI feel duty bound to do a post on the election Stateside, as today is the last day. The last day for what? Freedom possibly. I know that love for Bush from yanks is much stronger than anyone over here would have us believe, and I kind of understand why yanks would love this guy, as he is one of them. No, I don't mean poor and downtrodden, badly educated and xenophobic, I mean he understands their fears, their hopes and their national pride. Kerry is just a rich 'tosser' and has less redeeming factors, to the American eye. Of course it's a lot more complex than that, with the North/South divide in the States being a far more important factor than is ever discussed.

But I feel the main issue about the whole future of America will be the re-introduction of the draft. Every young man, when he turns 18, must register with the Draft board in the States, a procedure which has never been revoked since the Vietnam war. As forces around the world become more stretched, the need for a non volunteer force will become an absolute necessity. If the young of America want these foreign policies to go on unabated, then they must vote for Bush. If they want any semblance of say in their future, perhaps they should vote for Kerry. Perhaps his value of human life versus ideology may be a little higher than Bush's, and therefore make it easier for them to have a life of their own.

And, not to underplay this this next issue, whatever happens in the States tommorrow wil have a direct impact on thousands of young lives in Britain, those in the forces. We have no choice but to follow/help America, as history and responsibilty demand it. [The French are only anti war because they have so many dodgy business interests in repressive regimes like Iraq - go check on it, peacenik, they're making the same greedy deals in China as we speak, with no thought for human rights records or any such inconvenience, and no, we arn't doing the same thing...].

So, if lots of young people yearn for a future in the military, fighting mythical wars of democracy and freedom, when their own lives are virtually worthless, vote Bush. Voting for Kerry is just not voting for Bush. You don't have to like the man, just vote an anti Bush vote. [I know this won't be a popular opinion with some readers, but I believe the picture is bigger than just the American point of view. There is just too much at stake here.
